Wonder Woman bids good bye to her Eagle and Hello to W W

Over the years apart from the time when Princess Diana gave up her Wonder Woman Powers and Costume in the late 1960's, her costume and look had basically stayed the same.

Tiara with a Red Star, Round  Red Ear rings (sometimes Stars), White or Golden Girdle, Blue Shorts (originally Skirt) covered with White Stars, Red Boots with or without white stripe and a Red Bodice with Eagle Breast plate.

OK sometimes different artists changed the length of shorts and played about with the number of stars on them. Too her boots would alter at times...... But her Breast Plate Eagle on her Bodice would remain. Again the look would constantly be changing, as some artists hated the problems drawing the Golden Eagle .... but at the end of the day it was always an EAGLE.

This was all going to change very soon.

In 1982 DC Comics decided to Trade Mark The Wonder Woman Logo.  As they had done with other DC Characters like Superman , Batman and Green Lantern. Unlike these Heroes their logos had been designed for them and were unique. BUT DC found it difficult in Trade Marking an EAGLE, and even if they managed it WW'S Eagle had no constant DESIGN and kept changing.

The Solution was simple, The Eagle was replaced with a similar looking Double W.  This was passed off in the comics as Princes Diana allowing a WONDER WOMAN no profit making Charity to use her and a new logo to promote their causes that The Amazon Princess would also adopt.

Therefore no more Eagle,

Here is a look at the 1982 new  WW Look.

Artist had always hated the problems that drawing the Eagle on a Curvy Bust, and now they had to cope with drawing straight lines on a Curvaceous Bust.

But the artist coped and over time even the Double W would alter, and sometimes resemble the old styled  Eagle.

But after WW got her own Reboot in the 1987, just like what had happened to both Superman & Batman, Diana become a little bit more Greek in appearance and background.

The New Wonder Woman was now seen as just coming to "MAN'S WORLD" and was more of an Ambassador for Her People than Hero. But this did not stop her fighting bad guys and gals in the process.

The Man change to her appearance was her Hair and a smaller stars on her pants and another change to her WW breast plate...... and her Tiara got Bigger and more pointed.

WONDER WOMAN becomes A SUPER FRIEND

In the 1970's Princess Diana became even more popular as she was now part of the Hannah Barbara  cartoon series called SUPER FRIENDS. Starting in 1973 this series was in a nut shell  just The Justice League of America, with  Robin the Boy Wonder.  The addition to the superhero team a trio of sidekicks was also introduced, each of whom were new characters not drawn from the comic books, Twins Wendy and Marvin and their canine friend Wonder Dog who was  "Inspired" by the a certain Scooby Doo, these newbies were depicted as detectives and/or superheroes-in-training. These "new" team mates added the comedy element to the show.

As this was an animated show, all the established super heroes had to be more basically drawn, and Wonder Woman's costume was adapted. The Eagle breast plate was simplified and the stars became less and larger and her boots lost the white front stripe.

Here is the 1973-74 Super Friend inspired Wonder Woman.

This new look was later reflected in the comic book version, as now fans of the TV show began to read the comic adventures of the Amazon Princess.

In her Satin Tights, Fighting for Your Rights...... TV's Wonder Woman

In 1975 Wonder Woman hit the Small Screen in a new live action show staring ex beauty queen Linda Carter as The Amazon Princess Wonder Woman.

The first series took place in the 1940's and WW dressed in a costume originally with skirt and then shorts very similar to that depicted in the comics.

By the time the show moved onto season two, WW was now based in the current time which was the 1970's. However her costume was updated and restyled. The main differences from the comic version of the costume and the TV show were basically the breast eagle, less stars on the pants and stars added to her bracelets.

The stories were not always that great, but most of the male fans watched for the stunning figure of Linda Carter, who is to this day regarded as the ideal WONDER WOMAN.

Here is my version of the Linda Carter  TV's Wonder Woman.

Next time back to the comics.

Until then ENJOY !

MEANWHILE .... BACK ON EARTH TWO

Whilst Princess Diana of Earth One was spending the LATE 1960's and Early 1970's  as more Woman, than Wonder Woman, her Earth Two counter part was given the chance to shine.

The concept of Earth Two was now  a full part of the DC Universe. The simple idea that allowed the older stories of the current days heroes like Batman, Superman, and of Course Wonder Woman, could now be explained as these had been versions of the same heroes that had been born before World War II.  The old Justice Society now could exist along side the Newer Justice League, but on different Worlds.
Earth One & Two's Wonder Women

The Annual meet ups between the Justice League and Society members were a hit with the readers. The Old Flash , and Golden Age Green Lantern could have adventures with the present days Flash & Green Lantern. Both Supermen could interact, and for a time Batman could also meet his now retired doppelganger Chief of Police Bruce Wayne.  This gave the artist a chance to make the differences between the characters fun to play with.

With Batman, it was simple the Bat Sign on the chest, With Superman it was the Sign on the chest, This and Grey Hair made Superman look different and older. ( Both Batman & Superman had slight costume changes in the early years, so this was simple...., the Golden Aged Heroes dressed the part, whilst the younger aged heroes dressed more up to date.) but the Golden Wonder Woman and her present day "Sister" had almost identical uniforms. Whilst Diana of Earth One was powerless and out of uniform that was OK, but once Diana of Earth One went Back to being Wonder Woman again with powers, lasso and Tiara, BOTH Amazon princess's NEEDED TO LOOK DIFFERENT.
Earth One Heroes along side their older versions of Earth Two
Add caption

The solution was simple....the idea was to start to have Golden WW dress in the 1940's look and start to have wrinkles and Greying hair. She was still super strong like the younger version, but she looked older. (which for a character that was now supposed to age is a funny concept in its self.)  BUT the look did work, and over the years both Wonder Women had many adventures with and without their League and Society Members. In time the older Wonder Woman would loose her curly hair and adopt a more straight style like the modern day WW of Earth One.  But changing artists would some times make Older WW look more Golden and add the full head tiara and curly locks back on the Princess's head.
The Differences not different enough
Now Both Wonder Women looked the same BUT Different.

Earth Two's WW was allowed to marry, and now was Mrs Steve Trevor, and it was also announced they had a daughter Lyta, who would also go on to be the hero FURY.

Next Time WW moves into the 1970's and gets another make over.

Until then ENJOY !

NOT SO WONDERFUL WONDER WOMAN ! Welcome to the Swinging Sixties and Woman's Lib

It was all change for Princess Diana in 1968. For a start she lost her Powers and she gave up wearing her Wonder Woman costume all together, Wonder Woman was no more or was she ?
Add caption
DIANA GETS ALL MOD AND GROOVY

Without her Amazon powers and her lasso of truth , Princess Diana was now plain old Diana Prince, but that did not stop her from being a hero. The main reasons for this change of direction of Wonder Woman can be attributed to many things of that time. The World had started to fall out of love with Super Heroes and had begun falling in love with more normal Heroes. Cathy Gale and Emma Peel of Avengers fame had shown the world that Women could be the equal of Men, The Man from Uncle, and James Bond showed that Spies could be Cool.  So having a strong Willed Woman, taking on Evil and wrong doers only armed with her wits and her mastery of unarmed combat was want the public wanted. No more Bullets and Tiaras for Diana.

In some respects Wonder Woman the Amazon  now took a back seat to Diana Prince, who really was never much of a character, more of a disguise for Princess Diana. Not all little Girls could grow up to be a WONDER WOMAN, but they did have a chance of Becoming a DIANA PRINCE.

Diana opened a Clothing Boutique and started dressing in the style of that time. Jumpsuits, Mini Skirts etc. She began training her new powerless body in all of the martial arts she was able, to become the best she could be.  She was now less Super Hero, more Super Spy-Detective.

Divorced from her former life, Diana Prince spent the next few years fighting the good fight at a more local level. She would from time to time still aid her friends in the Justice League, as many of the League were non super powered after all, Like Batman, Green Arrow and Black Canary. But as time moved on Diana became more of a sole agent of justice.

During these times her costume was no more than day to day modern clothes. So each adventure she would wear something different.
THEY MAY NOW LOOK DATED, BUT AT THE TIME THEY WERE TRENDY !

The Clothes and colours would  change but on the whole she did like to stick to White. But here are a last of some of her Mod Looks.
The All White Collection

This change in direction was not a total hit with everyone, but Diana stayed unpowered up until and end of 1972 when the Wonder was put Back into Wonder Woman. Out went the Jumpsuits, in came the Tiara, Breast Plate and Starry Pants..... Also a return of Magic Lasso's and Invisible Planes too

Next time more Wonderful WW costume changes.

Until then ENJOY

Wonder Woman gets a 1960's make over.

As time moved into the 1960's Princess Diana's Wonder Woman Costume went through many changes. (as did she.)

First her Eagle Breast Plate became more less Eagle and more Breast Plate, Her Long shorts became short shorts, her Hair went from curly to straight and her tiara once worn on top of her hair, now went through it.

The only real constant during this period were her boots. Although the heal lengths did change all the time.

However, As Princess Diana moved to the final part of the decade she would adopt a brand new look. (But more of that next time.)

During the 1960's the idea of Earth 1 and Earth 2 became a new concept. Wonder Woman along with her allies Superman & Batman had all been around since the Start of WW 2, and had fought beside that golden Ages heroes of that time like the Justice Society of America. Earth 2 would help sort out the continuity problems that an none ageing super hero had. Earth 2 heroes could now age, whilst Earth 1 could show them as being connected to the modern era that they now lived in.

So like Batman & Superman, Wonder Woman's adventures in the Golden Era were now attributed to the Wonder Woman of Earth 2. His meant like Batman and Superman, Diana got to meet her "Sister" and doppelganger from an earlier time. This made sense to now style both Wonder Woman is different versions of the famous costume.

Later during the 1970's the Older WW would start to be shown with Grey Hair, and would now be married to her version of Steve Trevor.

So here is how Wonder Woman looked through the 1960's into the 1970's. The Blanked out picture is how she was depicted circa 1968 when it was all change for Princess Diana..... But more of that next time.

Small changes during the Swinging Sixties, but all change after 1968 !

WONDER WOMAN MOVES FROM THE 1940'S TO 1950'S

As Wonder Woman moved through the mid 1940's into the 1950's her shirt developed into long shorts, whilst her boots took on a more sandal and strap  look.

By the 1950's her boots became boots again, minus the white strip down the middle. Again these changes were more to do with the artist drawing Princess Diana. However, her cleavage and bodice  were adjusted as the the newly formed comic code had issues with female characters showing too much flesh.  Although most of these changes related to the rear view.  No more bare back for the Amazon Princess.  Also around this time, Wonder Woman's breast plate Eagle lost its tail, as it was Incorporated and became part of her girdle.  Her Ear rings also seemed to change size from large ovals to round beads. Again this more to do with the artist than design as were the slight colour changes to her over all costume.

More Wonder Woman Next Time

She's a Wonder ...... WONDER WOMAN

The next person to get the Dawgs treatment is the most famous Warrior Princess in the World.

On the whole, Princess Diana of Paradise Island ( or Themyscira as it later became known ) back story and history over the years has stayed basically the same. Even after the Many Crisis' that The DC Universe has endured over the years, The Wonder Woman character and look has remained  the same.

Yes, her costume has seen a few changes along the way, many due to the changes in the many artist that have drawn her over her long career, but again these have mainly been cosmetic. However, in recent  years like many of her DC friends, Princess Diana has seemed to have a new look every other week.

What I am attempting in my blog is basically to show some of the main changes to our favourite amazing Amazon.

So sit back and relax as we start our look at The Wonders of The Wonder Woman.

Until DC's New 52 relaunch, there were a few other aspects of the origin story that remained consistent. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta , ( who would go on to be a Wonder Woman herself)  longing to have a daughter created Diana out of clay, and the Greek gods bestowed the clay baby with life, making her the only Amazon who was not conceived by a man. Diana grew up among the Amazons who began to teach her the skills of a warrior as well as the lessons of peace and love. When Steve Trevor, an American pilot, crash lands on Paradise Island, the Amazons have a contest to determine who should receive the honor of taking him back to man's world. Once there they would then act as an ambassador of all that the Amazons. Princess Diana won the contest , and left her home and the rest is history as they say.

Wonder Woman was the creation of William Moulton Marston a famous American Psychologist and writer. She first appeared in December 1941 in All Star Comics #8 and was and is considered a positive feminist icon. As she was created during World War 2, most of Wonder Woman's adventures revolved around fighting the Axis Powers.

Her first look gave her a Skirt that later would change into long shorts. Unlike Batman and Superman, what Wonder Woman worn would always cause problems with the Publishers and the sensors of the time..... BUT on the whole her artists tended to make sure Princess Diana looked more hero than victim. Women at that time were depicted in Comic Books as either Girl Friends-Wives, who were either kidnapped or threatened. Strong Women were usually Villain's and Bad Girls !

Well here is Wonder Woman as she looked in  1941

The Original Wonder Woman

She had a further tweak to her costume the same year with her boots and Eagle breast plate.

small changes for Princess Diana

Next Time how the dress evolves from culottes to shorts..... and her boots change again.

EMILY'S BEST FRIEND..... MEET TOY STORY'S JESSIE

One of the saddest tales was Jessie. On the Outside she was a rough and tough cow gal, the equal to her pal sheriff Woody.... whilst on the inside she was sad and lonely. Not understanding why Emily had given her away. Jessie  still longed for the love she once had from her owner Emily.

Abandon and alone, she again found love and friendship among the other toys in Andy's Bedroom.

Here is my Dawgs version of Jessie.
