Richard Rider was chosen at random by Rhomann Dey, an alien and the last surviving Nova Centurion of the planet Xandar. Richard would inherit both Rhomann's rank as a NOVA PRIME and all of the powers that came along with it.
Dey had been having mortally wounded in the battle that tore Xandar apart, however, Dey succeeded in tracking the space pirate Zorr (the person responsible for both his fatal injures and the destruction of his home planet) to Earth but was unable to defeat him due to the extent of his injuries. Near death, Dey chooses to transfer his power to an unsuspecting human on the planet below, praying that whomever he finds will take up his cause
RICHARD RIDER RECEIVES A GIFT FROM OUTER SPACE |
TRANSFORMED INTO A NOVA CENTURION |
You could say Richard Rider was in the right place at the right time when he got hit by a strange beam of light from the Dying Aliens orbiting space ship. But via this beam Richard Rider gained the uniform and powers of a Centurion of the NOVA CORPS........ However, Richard received very little instruction on how to use these new powers. Or what a Nova Centurion was all about.
Richard gradually starts learning how to control his new abilities. Calling himself Nova, he becomes the newest Super Hero based out of New York City.
As time goes on Rider eventually discovered Dey's Space Ship in orbit around earth, and this would lead him to travel to the stars, and back to the home of the Nova Corps..... XANDAR.
NOVA THE HUMAN ROCKET |
Although Xandar had been destroyed, a new man made planet was in the process of being built. Whilst on Xandar, Richard leaned more about the Nova Corps and became involved in protecting Xandar from destruction by the hands of the War Like Skull Empire. This battle would include many other heroes including The Fantastic Four, Rom the Space Knight and The Champions of Xandar.
When the Skulls were eventually defeated, a war weary Richard requests to be released from his duties on Xandar and return to Earth. His request is granted, but at a price. Richard is told he must relinquish his Nova powers in order to do so.
Homesick for Earth and his family, Richard agreed to give up his powers, which he is told were needed to help rebuild war-ravaged Xandar's defences. Returning home to Earth, Richard takes up his life again as a normal human once more, A Nova Centurion no more......or so it seemed.
