The Coming of the Liberty Legion Part Eleven..... He is a real cool dude Meet Jack Frost

Bucky Barnes and The Patriot had been looking through some of the secret files complied by the FBI on certain people who had recently appeared through out America with extra special abilities and powers.

As the pair looked at the details of these special people Bucky planned to see if he could contact as many as possible, as he though this would be his only way to tackle his own team of Super Heroes that had been brain washed into helping the Red Skull attack the very people and country they were supposed to be protecting.

The next file was that of a unusual person call JACK FROST

This Character was unlike the others already seen.  For a start he did not even look Human as his body appeared to be made up of ICE. Also he did not know who he really was or from where he originated. Even Years later it was uncertain if " Jack Frost " was even Human or a off shoot of a race of God Like Creatures from Norse  Asgardian Myth .... A Frost Giant.

From the information gathered from the Blue Man himself.  All that he knew was that some time in 1941 he awoke somewhere in the Arctic Circle.  He wandered for some weeks until he arrived in Alaska where he met an injured America called Dr Forbes.  Forbes had discovered a large Gold deposit in Alaska but had been shot by a mobster called Mike Zelby who wanted to take the claim as his own.  Forbes dying begged the then unnamed hero to go to New York and protect his daughter Alice who knew about her fathers gold strike and would most likely be in danger from Zelby.

On arriving in NYC Jack Frost asked the local law enforcement department to help bring Zelby to Justice. However, the Law believing Frost was a crazy man all dressed in blue like a circus freak refused. This angered Frost and he lashed out revealing his ice powers.

Jack found out where Alice Forbes was living, and arrived in the nick of time as Zelby had set the apartment block ablaze to kill her. Frost saved Alice, but Zelby died as a result of his own arson. The police force arrived to see that Zelby was dead and blamed Frost for this. They attempted to arrest him, but Jack managed to escape.

Frost vowed that if this was the way man kind wanted to treat him as a criminal and their enemy, he would become an enemy to all of mankind.

Although bitter, soon Jack Frost found he liked Man Kind, and would help out in secret those who had been either oppressed or were being harmed by criminal.  He would still be chased by the Police for the Murder of Zelby, but Jack Frost seemed to enjoy this game of Cat and Mouse. Always keeping one step ahead of them.

The FBI files detailed that they believed in Jack Frost's innocence of the Zelby murder as they had interviewed Alice Forbes who had explained what she remembered, but as Frost refused to come forward he would be branded an outlaw until the full story could be found out and confirmed. He was nicknamed around this time Jack Frost, a name the mystery Blue Man adopted as it understood its meaning, and in a way apt.

Jack Frosts powers appeared to be many fold, but they included the ability to generate Ice and Snow out of the  thin air,  to Turn himself almost transparent, nearly invisible you could say,  make  weapons and tools out of ice, and like the Human Torch who was able to  leech heat away from a fire or a person, Jack Frost appeared to be able to leech cold from objects and people too.

Bucky understood the powers of Jack Frost as it was similar to his friend Jim Hammond aka The Human Torch, but in reverse.

Bucky knew that if he was able to recruit even one of these new super powered individuals he would have a fighting chance to both defeat his brain washed friends and stop the Red Skull too.

With much vigour and conviction Bucky  continued his broadcasts to the nation. Calling for the help of these new mystery men by name.  Hoping they or their friends would hear his call to arms.

Next Time The Legion Assembles for the first Time.

Until Then Enjoy !

The Coming of the Liberty Legion part TEN....Meet The Blue Diamond

The Next file that was perused by The Patriotic heroes was that of the archaeologist Dr Elton T Morrow who had discovered what was then considered the largest Diamond ever discovered. In fact many years later it was discovered that this Blue Diamond was a fragment of an ancient artifact formed after the Big Bang. Called the Lifestone Tree, over the years many of its fragments had empowered many individuals on earth and out in the Universe.

However, back our story...... Upon finding the Stone in the late 1930's in Antarctica, Dr Morrow decided to take it back to his native country of America where we could study it better. On the ocean voyage home, the ship carrying the Diamond was attacked by a German U Boat.  The torpedo that struck the Ship triggered a massive explosion. This in turn shattered the priceless stone in smaller fine pieces that many of which got in bedded in the skin and body of Elton Morrow.

Weeks later Dr Morrow was picked up floating in the ocean by a British Ship. No one could believe that he had survived such a long time out on the sea, but soon it became apparent that the Elton Morrow had been changed by the experience.

Firstly he discovered his skin was unable to be cut or pieced, also he found he had super strength. He found he could punch holes through walls. Also he found he did not have to breath at all and he did not need to eat to survive. Although he did breath and eat, he did this just to appear normal.

Later in life he would discover that the Blue Diamond fragments had affected his ageing  process. He did age, but a much much slower rate

Believing that his new gifts could be an asset to the War Effort, Dr Morrow retired from his scientific studies and offered his "Super Human" abilities to the world, Calling himself the Blue Diamond.

This is how the Blue Diamond first appeared in Daring Mystery Comics Issue 7# back in 1941

For the 1970's Liberty Legion The Blue Diamond only got at small make over. A new Mask and a Belt was all the artist decided needed changing.

Here is a look at the Blue Diamond in action discovering a Nazi secret base under the streets of NYC

On the Whole the Blue Diamond stayed the same in the retro fitted history of the Liberty Legion.

Here is a final look at our hero

Next time another Hero destined to become a member of the Liberty Legion.

Until then     ENJOY !

The Coming of the Liberty Legion Part Nine Meet Miss America

The Next persons file to get the interest of The Patriot & Young Buck Barnes was that of a young late teen heiress called Madeline Joyce.

From the details contained in the records it said that Madeline was born in Washington DC and was the niece and ward of James Bennet, The Radio Mogul and businessman. James Bennet was investing much money into research of a Professor Lawson who claimed he could give super human powers to anyone with the aid of electrical energy resulting from lighting.

James Bennet has set the Professor up in a specially build laboratory in a deserted light house on the coast of the Eastern Seaboard. Madeline was known to be very curious of her uncles interests in the sciences and decided to find out for herself what his latest secret experiments were all about.

The details then became very sketchy to what then happened. Some reports said that in some way Madeline had caused the accident that destroyed the Laboratory or that it was a freak accident that occurred when the light house was hit by lightning... but the end result was that Madeline was hit by the full discharge of the electricity channelled through the Professors machine.

After a month in a coma Madeline awoke to find she had developed super powers. As Professor Lawson had died before he could fully discover what had happened, the powers Madeline had developed  were nicknamed Super Vitality. The truth of Professors death was covered up as it turned out he had originally believed his machine had killed Madeline and in a panic the scientist destroyed his equipment and notes  and in doing so took his  own life.

These powers of Madeline over the Years would vary, but on the whole she had Super Strength and the ability to fly.  Years later it was discover like Robert Frank aka The Whizzer , Madeline Joyce had been a latent Mutant and her exposure to the electrical charge her allowed her own abilities to surface.

Taking the name Miss America, Madeline Joyce had joined forces with the local law enforcement agencies to help fight for justice and freedom on the home front.

She decided not to adopt a secret identity as apart from her Uncle she had no one to worry about.

Like many of the Heroes of the time, Miss America's costume did change from time to time. Not much, but small differences popped up every now and then.

Here are a few of the different Looks over the Years.

Miss America as she appeared in the 1941 Marvel Mystery Comic # 49

The Cape would change from Red to Blue at times, and the Head Dress Hat would change too

With the revival of the character in the 1970's she sported a Full Head Cowl
This look would also alter regarding colour between issues
Back in the 1940's she even went Blond
And Brunette
And even her poor eye sight meant she started to wear her glasses on missions. No wonder the writers dropped her X Ray Vision.
But this version is the one she sported for most of her time with the Invaders during the 1970's

Miss America was one of the more powerful members of the Liberty Legion, but over time the number of powers she had reduced. Maybe she was too much like Superman

Next Time its another Hero to take a crack at joining the Liberty Legion.

Until then ENJOY !

The Coming of the Liberty Legion Part Eight..... Meet The Whizzer

The next person to catch the eye of both The Patriot and Bucky was that of a man who goes by the name THE WHIZZER.

Born in St Louis Missouri , Robert L Frank had been part of an expedition into the African Bush lead by his father Dr Emil Frank.  Emil Frank was a notable scientist who had many scientific interests included the study of wild life and exotic  fauna & flora.   His health was not good, so he had asked his son Robert (Bob) to  come along to help him. Whilst exploring alone Robert was bitten by a deadly cobra, as Dr Emil Frank had no antidote to treat his son he watched as Robert life seemed to fade away.   The Cobra then returned and as it was about to attack Dr Frank also,  all of a sudden a mongoose sprang out of the vegetation and fought the deadly snake. The Mongoose managed to kill the Cobra but had been bitten itself in the process.

Dr Frank realised that the mongoose had some resistance to cobra venom and thought it he gave his son a transfusion of the creatures blood this may help the situation. He had nothing to loose, as he knew Robert was close to death.

Surprisingly the transfusion stabilised  Robert and when he awoke he found his fathers dead body kneeling over him. The old man had died and it was assumed it was the shock of the whole incident that had affect on his own health.

Soon thereafter Robert realised that he had developed super speed.  He had originally put it down to the transfusion.

Robert Frank decided to use his new found powers to help continue the good his father had done during his life.   Robert chose the name The Whizzer as he super speed allowed his to Whizz about.

The FBI Files could not rule out the story about the Mongoose Blood, but FBI Scientists had no other explanation at this point.   The Subject had been seen to travel at speeds over 100 mph and had the ability to run over water. but much later on in life Robert Frank would learn that this was not the whole story, the blood transfusion was not the main cause only the catalyst .

The FBI file said that they believed Robert Frank was of good character and would be ideal  as a special  agent for the FBI.

Bucky believed this super speedster who be ideal to take on the likes of the brain washed Invaders.

When The Whizzer first burst onto the pages of USA Comics No 1# from 1941 he looked a lot different to what he does today.

The First Costume had no elements that you could compare to later looks. The Cape, helmet and short sleeves were very like most "super Heroes" at that time. However the Yellow and Blue colouring would stay constant.

The Original look of The Whizzer from USA Comics 1# 1941

Unlike some of the other members of what would be a called t The Liberty Legion, the Whizzer had a much longer life back in the war years.  And over the time his uniform adapted.  As his look seemed to change from issue to issue in the early months here are a few of the best looks.

Soon was gone the cape and the short sleeves, but in came the winged Helmet.  It was a nod to the Roman and Greek Gods Mercury and Hermes who in classical paintings had wings on the heads.  This looks more like an angry chicken. The trade mark W was first seen around this time too.

The Look nearly complete.

This Cleaner look was what was used in the 1970's when the Liberty Legion was introduced.
The liberty legion was not the last stop for this speedster, he would like on much longer in the Marvel world. Bod Frank who see life again after the 2nd World War, and intro the modern world when he became part of the Mighty Avengers of the late 1970's -early 80's. (But more about that later )

Back to the War years, The Whizzer would later join the Invaders as part of the team, but again that's another tale for another time.

By the time he joined the Invaders his look was finalised. The Helmet was now a cowl with wings, and the bird head just a small feature on the forehead.
Next time we meet a Super Powered lady who would come to mean a lot to both The Liberty Legion, The Invaders and The Whizzer himself

Until then ENJOY !

The Coming of the Liberty Legion Part Seven Meet The Thin Man

As Bucky and the Patriot continued looking through the Secret FBI Files, both found the people and information contained inside more and more amazing.

The Next Hero  that was considered was that of  Dr Bruce Dickson PHD
AKA The Thin Man

The story of Bruce Dickson was a very simple one, but was fantastic in its contents.

Some time in the 1930's a scientist and part time explorer Dr Bruce Dickson attempted to climb Mount Kalpurthia that was located in the Himalayas.  Becoming lost from his party in a freak snow storm and near to death, Bruce found a cave. Entering into the cave a strange green light lead him to discover a hidden city. This city he would learn was the lost civilisation of the Kalahia.  The Kalahian's were an advanced race of humans who had become exposed over time to a mutagenic  substance that occurred in the rocks surrounding the city.  This had an effect that allowed them to stretch and become very flat and thin.  Almost 2 dimensional  Also it had given the people a form of eternal youth.  Entering the city had exposed Bruce to the substance and he quickly learnt he too had developed the Thin - Stretchy ability too. Bruce remained with the Kalahian's for many years , even falling in love and marrying  Olalla, who was the daughter of  the chief elder of the city.

Bruce realised that if he stayed too long in the city he would lose control of his ageing and would or could live forever. But his lust to learn and discover new adventures eventually lead him to leave the hidden city with his wife Olalla and return to the real world. He found that he soon developed his powers further in ways that the peaceful Kalahia had never needed to.

On entering the real world again he discovers that since he has been gone the world has moved on the the rise of The Nazi's has brought the World into the Brink of another World War.

For a while he and his wife worked as adventures and undercover operatives for the US government, but fearing for his wife's safety  Bruce told her to return to her home whilst he continued to fight alone.

Bruce Dickson called him self The Thin Man and would aid the fight against fascism were and when he could.  His knowledge of the  advanced science of the Kalahia would allow him to use this to make improvements to existing technology which included his own private air craft.
The Thin Man foil;s yet another threat of terror  from  Nazi sympathisers in New York City

Bucky added the Thin Man's name to his list when he made the next call for help broadcast to the nation.

Like many of the heroes used again in the Liberty Legion their original look was some what altered,

The original look was overall the same design but different in colour.  Also as the swash buckler look was in at the time, a head scarf sash was added.

The 1940's hero as seen in Mystic Comics issue 4#

The re use of the character in the 1970's gave the Thin Man a more green and yellow look.   Better I think.

The Thin Man a hero from the 1940's shown as he was then and later re imagined for the 1970's
Over the next few years the Thin Man stayed in the new classic Green and Yellow look.   Later on he would again get a make over....... but that's another story for another time .
Next time its the turn of a very fast hero indeed.

Rush Back Sooon.... and until then    ENJOY !!!
