Again it always surprises me when yet another mile stone is hit. 28000 visits plus this month.

Many Thanks from me and my Minuet  Mutts which I posted a few years back. I was proud of this re Creation of the classic scene from the Film and Graphic Novel. Here it is again updated for this special occasion.

Minute Men 1940

At the start of my tribute to the Marvellous Minute Men I post a Black and White version of that PHOTO from the Graphic Novel that was so well recreated in the Watch Men Movie.

BACK TO THE MINUTE MUTTS.... MEET THE ORIGINAL SILK SPECTRE

Born Sally Juspeczyk,  Sally spent most of her life hiding from who she really was.  A daughter of  Polish immigrates, Sally was ashamed of her Polish Ancestry. Adopting the name Jupiter she ran away from home and became a waitress whilst she waited to be discovered.

She later became a "STAR" as a dancer in a burlesque show, where her looks would thrill the gentlemen audiences...... 3 times a night.

Soon she started a career as a model of clothes, although she was noted for not what she worn, more like how little she wore.

In a attempt to gain further notoriety she tried her hand as a costumed hero. Unlike some of the other male masked heroes who kept their identities a secret, Sally Jupiter was happy for the world to know that she was THE SILK SPECTRE.

Her agent Laurence Schexnayder would be one of the people who helped launch the Minute Men onto the world stage. He knew how to control Sally, and mold her into a money making STAR

Again unlike her male counterparts, The Silk Spectre was more SHOW BUSINESS than real Masked Marvel, but the public loved her, and the press enjoyed writing about her heroic deeds.

Unfortunately, like alot of famous people, Sally's private life never measured up to her public life.  Where the Silk Spectre appeared to be a positive, flirty, in control and proud to be a sex symbol..... as plain Sally Jupiter in private, she was  unsure of herself and had serious self-esteem issues.  In Public Sally was the Silk Spectre, Idol of millions , and adored by all men, but behind closed doors  Sally she was just plain old Sally Juspeczyk, an ugly  Polish Girl who was unhappy with who she was.

THE COMEDIAN

Edward Blake from a young age was a troubled young man. He was known to use his fists first and talk second. But usually after he had used his fists, his adversary was never in a any type of state to hold a conversation, as they were usually unconscious or worse.   He invented his alter ego The Comedian around the age of 15, and had a long career as a masked vigilante.  He  had morals, his own warped morals of what he considered was right and wrong ......    He would crack jokes while he cracked skulls. He enjoyed his life as a Masked Marvel.

In the beginning he used his fists, but later on found that a base ball bat was more effective. Many thought he was a vicious and brutal young man.......  A title Edward was proud of.   The Truth is He WAS.  The Villians freared him....... as did his FRIENDS !

MOTHMAN

BRYON LEWIS was better known to the World as MOTHMAN

He was the only member of the Minute Man who had the ability to fly through the air.  Well his large wings gave him the ability to GLIDE through the air would be more correct.

Originally  from Connecticut coming from an old American Family with  vast Wealth, Bryon would soon move to New York City in search of Fun and Adventure . During the 2nd World War he was a conscientious objector, but  this did not stop him from doing his bit. He would not carry a gun, but he would serve as a Medical Aide and saw front line action as a result.

After the war, Bryon went Back to his old life, as nothing more than a Playboy spending his time basically enjoying himself.  However, when he started to hear and see evidence of colourful costumed Heroes appearing in and around New York, Bryon decided to use his Money and spare time to become a Hero himself....... The MOTHMAN !

 Here is Mothman as originally shown in the Watchman Graphic novel. His costume was slightly altered for the Watchman movie.  Here is both versions of the Mothman.

NITE OWL The Original

Hollis Mason originally came from Montana. The son of a Farmer, Hollis moved with his parents to New York City around the age of 12.

Whilst his Father worked at a garage that specialised in Motor Car repair , Hollis would regularly  help him. As the young Hollis grew up he decided to become a police officer and later influenced by the comic exploits of SUPERMAN and the real life Heroics of the Mystery Masked Man, The HOODED JUSTICE.... he decided that was the direction to go.

He designed his own secret identify and fashioned a costume.  When Hollis was not active as a police Officer, he became THE NITE OWL.

As the Nite Owl he found he could achieve more than he was able to as a Police Officer.... However he still needed to make money, so he had to balance his time as the paid law enforcement office with that of the freelance vigilante hero .

After all, the equipment he needed as The Nite Owl was not cheap to develop and design.  Lucky for him, the knowledge he had gained in working in the Auto Shop helped him make his unique Nite Owl equipment.

THE SILHOUETTE

Ursula Zandt was originally from an old Aristocratic Family  living in Austria.  As she was Jewish she was forced to leave her home country and travelled to the USA to escape from rise of the Nazis Party and persecution of Hitler

She had a unusual look and her masculine form of dress made her very distinctive.  In fact this look was more about HER than just a fashion statement.  Ursula was a Lesbian and although she was a female she adopted a more manly approach to her life. In the days before Woman's Lib, Ursula believed she and woman in general were equal to man, and in some cases BETTER.

She hated people praying in the Innocent or  the different.  So when she heard about a crooked publisher dealing with and making child pornography, she felt that she could deal with this and punish the guilty.


When she managed to find the whereabouts of the location  the films and photos were being taken , she ended up beating the Publisher and his camera man within a inch of their lives.  In the process she rescued a number of young children that had been kidnapped for the purpose of staring in the perverted feature films and photographs.

The Newspapers soon learnt about this female vigilante.  As Ursula worn no mask, her identity was never a secret. As much as the Newspapers praised her Heroic good deeds, they were always speculating about her.... and who or what she really was.

Here is my version of Silhouette,  in the original graphic novel, her costume was no more than a black cropped jacket with black riding trousers. In the Movie Watchmen her outfit was the same but had a more military look...... This is the look I have used .

However, in the New comic version " Minuet Men " she has had a complete revamp, so I have done this version of Ursula also. Out go the Stilettos and in comes riding boots. The short Jacket is now a LONG flowing coat which is topped off with a Hat....... AND two Pearl Handled Revolvers.


THE " NEW LOOK " SILHOUETTE

Out of all the Minutemen,  The Silhouette is the only character to have her costume changed for the new comic book stories.   In the original she looked more mannish, where now her look reflects a more fashionable feminine look.... which I understand will be more in keeping with her back story.  No more Girlie Shoes..... now its sensible foot ware.

DOLLAR BILL

Not much is known about this Masked Marvel.  It is believed Dollar Bill was from Kansas and was a Star College Athlete.   His real name is not known, but it is possible he was called BILL

He became a SUPER HERO by accident after being employed by a National Bank to be their Super Hero MASCOT.... With the rise of the Masked Men, the Bank enjoyed the fact they had their own in house Super Hero looking after their Bank and the Customers money. (with World Banking as it is  today we could certainly use one these days !!! )

The Costume was designed and made by the Bank for Dollar Bill to Wear.  When he was not look after the Bank, he would spend time stopping crime on the Streets of New York.

However, the  costume, or namely  the CAPE was to prove  Bill's down fall.

CAPTAIN METROPOLIS

Like the other Minute Men, Captain Metropolis had no real super power, except his wits and his fists..... AND A NEED TO FIGHT CRIME, and punish villians.

As a young child, Nelson Gardener was a sickly and asthmatic.  But even at a young age his own determination help him over come his condition. He started training himself to be a stronger fitter person. And over the years he began to  overcome his condition, and was no longer considered a weakling any longer.   He became a star on the field with college football, and when he graduated he joined the US Marine Corp, a way to help do his bit to help his fellow Americans.

After leaving the forces he felt that he himself could do something about the rotten element that had started to raise its head in American Society. Using the skills he had learnt in the Marines along with those he already processed he adopted the identity of CAPTAIN METROPOLIS and started to fight crime in the City.

Feeling that he could not win this war against crime alone, he decided to help create the Minute Men, To be made up of people like him who wanted to make a difference.

THE HOODED JUSTICE

This Masked Marvel first appeared in late 1938 when he saved a young couple from a back street robbery in the Queens district of New York.  At this time he was no more than a nameless vigilante who preyed on those who attacked and wanted to harm others. 

His style of  justice was brutal and without mercy, and soon the Press nicknamed him THE HOODED JUSTICE.


THE ORIGINAL MASKED MARVEL

Who he was, was never known,  and his motive for deciding to help  keep the peace was also a mystery...... however his actions soon began to catch the attention of others.  In the coming months more masked  heroes started appearing on the on the Streets, things would nver be the same again.

HERE COME THE MINUTE MUTTS

Originally the Minute Men were just a small part of the story that was called THE WATCH MEN.  Fans of the original graphic novel and the film wanted to know a little bit more about the original team that help give birth to the Watchmen.

Like DC's Justice Society the Minute Men had their crime fighting careers ended due to government intervention regarding MASKED VIGILANTES.... and also like the post crisis DC universe, many of the Silver Aged Heroes had connections to their Golden Age counterparts. Especially with both teams having a Nite Owl and a Silk Spectre on their teams.

Each  post I will introduce my versions of the Minute Men or MUTTS and try to tell you a little bit about each.

BEFORE THE WATCHMEN ( WATCH DAWGS)

A few weeks back I did a series on the Watchmen  who I renamed my Watch Dawgs, at the same time as drawing these Mighty Mutts I did their "parent" team called the Minute Men or  Minutes Mutts

Basing my designs on the original Watchdawg graphic Novel, with a little nod to the film versions of the forerunners to the Watchmen, I present the Minutes Mutts.

As the Minute men are now subject to their own limited comic series, I thought it would be an ideal time to let "MY DAWGS OUT"


We start with my version of the iconic Photograph which featured in the original Graphic Novel and the Movie version of the Watchmen

WHO WATCHES THE WATCH-DAWGS ?

I plan to look at the Minuet Men sometimes soon, but next up I think I will be doing a little bit of AVENGING again.

OZYMANDIAS HERO OR VILLIAN ?

Adrian Veidtz believed himself to be the Smartest Man on the Planet. He also believed he was able to use 100% of his Brain and had total control over his Mind and Physical Body.  He was perfection with no equal on the Planet....... He Thought !

He Modelled himself on Alexander The Great and spent many years in his youth travelling the world in search of knowledge. Knowledge was Power, and with Power comes Control, and with Control comes the ability to make decisions for others...... He would be praised as a God..... No not A GOD, But as THE ONLY GOD.

Returning to the United States in his late twenties he decided to us his skill of Mental and Physical perfection in Crime Fighting, Calling himself Ozymandias.  He found that he could out think and wit most of his opponents with ease.

Growing tired of the task of being a crime fighter, Adrian retired and use his skills to start inventing things to better mankind.  Being rich had its advantages, but soon his personal fortune and influence meant he was a big player with the US Government even playing homage to him. Though his vast net work of companies he started to be able to manipulate rulers of other countries also.   He was King of the World, well in his mind he was.

However, The Smartest Man in The World had realised that the People of planet Earth would one day destroy each other  and in doing so destroy  HIS  planet. Believing that Mankind needed saving from itself, Adrian started to plan to ensure that war would not and could not happen.

He began to believe that it was his god given right to save humanity, and as a result started to look down on all others.  His Plan to save the World would result in killing thousands, BUT he thought it was the right thing to do. He was acting to save HIS people and HIS world.  They would be thankful to him he believed.

His plan was discovered in part by the Comedian, that is why Adrian had to kill him.... This was what sparked the reforming of the Watchmen, which ultimately brought all of them back together again.  Was this of  part Adrian's plan, or was it a miscalculation on his part.  Whatever the answer was the result was the same.  the World was saved but  at what price.  

Thousands of innocent people were killed , Two of the Watchmen were now dead, One had lost his humanity and left the Planet and one had got his victory, but had ruined his reputation in the process. The realisation of Adrian's acts could not be forgiven..... so it was decided that the truth could never be known. ( But secrets do have a habit of being unearthed in time)    Only Two of the Watchmen had a happy ending.... both finding Love and realising that if they wanted to live life to the full , They Needed to become Heroes again.

THE HERO OF THE HOUR ? OR A MASS MURDER ?

MEET THE COMEDIAN OR IS IT THE COMIC-HOUND

The Death of a Hero sparks the original investigation that helps tell the tale of the Watchmen.

Edward Blake aka The Comedian is a ruthless, cynical, sarcastic, bully who Moon lighted as a Hero. In another world he would be one of the Bad Guys, but for all The Comedian's faults he fights to preserve Justice, or his version of justice.

He was originally part of the 1940's line up of the Minute Men, who were a forerunner of The Watchmen. Whilst part of the Minutemen, The Comedian had a relationship with his fellow team mate Sally Jupiter aka The Silk Spectre.  This resulted in Sally becoming pregnant with her Daughter Laurie. He was sadistic and enjoyed beating up the villains a bit too much. As a result of his heavy handedness he was expelled from the Minutemen. 

Sally never told Blake that Laurie was his daughter until many years later when The Comedian tried to seduce Laurie, the 2nd Silk Spectre. Luckily Sally stepped in before things went too far.

The Character of the was mainly based in the Charlton Comics character The Peacemaker, with a little bit of Marvel Comics super spy, Nick Fury thrown in for good measure.

His trade mark Smiley Face Badge becomes splattered with blood at the beginning of the WATCHMEN saga, which become the main symbol of the tale.

THE SILK SPECTRE LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER

LAUREL JANE JUSPECEZYK or Laurie to her friends was the Daughter of the Original Silk Spectre from the 1940's.

Her Mother Sally Jupiter, or The Original Silk Spectre always wanted her daughter to go into the family business as a costumed crime fighter. Laurie on the other hand was not so keen, but to please her Mother who had herself retired from fighting crime mainly due to her age and becoming a mother, Laurie pulled on her silk stockings and skimpy uniform and became the New Silk Spectre. Both Laurie and her mothers relationship was strained by this, mainly due to the problem that Laurie could not always cope with Sally's over bearing nature.  Deep down inside Sally was jealous of her daughter, and blamed Laurie for her having to give up her own Heroic life. 

Laurie had always suspected that her Mothers Husband Laurence Schexnayder was not her real Father,  however for years she had believed that her Mother's fellow crime fighter from the Minutemen, The Hooded Justice was her real Father.  It was not until after the Death of another Masked Hero    The Comedian, did Laurie discover that HE was her real Dad.

Laurie spent many years as the Silk Spectre,  even finding love with one of her fellow Watchmen, Doctor Manhattan.    When the US Government band un registered  Super Heroes, Laurie retired and set up home with her lover the Blue God like Dr Manhattan.

However, as time went on she found it difficult to cope with his changes in personality and slow loss of his Humanity.... as a result Laurie left him and found love again with the Nite Owl.

The Silk Spectre  and the 2nd Silk Spectre is loosely based on the Charlton Comic Character NIGHTSHADE, however they have more in common with The Phantom Lady from the 1940's and the slightly later Black Canary who's characteristics where used in forming both The Original Silk Spectre Sally and her Daughter Laurie.

NITE OWL OR IS IT BITE HOWL

DANIEL DREIBERG became the second person to fight crime as the NITE OWL, with Hollis Mason being the original who had retired some years earlier.

The Nite Owl was loosely based on another Charlton Comic character THE BLUE BEETLE, and like The Blue Beetle there had been a silver and modern day version of the character.

Non super powered both Nite Owl's had different ways of fighting crime. Where the original wore a basic costume (Very Like Robin the Boy Wonder) and used his wits and his fists to fight crime, the 2nd Nite Owl used a more updated costume that Incorporated armour and gadgets. (very like THE BAT-MAN)

DOCTOR MANHATTAN OR IS IT DOG-TOR MUTT-HATTAN ?

Unlike the other Watchmen, Dr Manhattan does have Super Human Powers. He was just plain old Doctor Jonathan Osterman a physicist  who due to an accident in 1959 was transformed into a glowing blue being composed of quantum energy. 

After his accident or rebirth, he is quickly requested to work with the US government of the day where he uses his new abilities and his already enhanced  knowledge in the quest to better man kind. He was rechristened Dr Manhattan after the Manhattan Project that developed the First Atomic Weapons after W W 2.    In the early days he did dabble with being a Super Hero as such, but science and knowledge where his true vocation.

He has many powers that include super human strength, telekinesis, teleportation and control over matter.  His mind perceives time as happening simultaneously, ie  the future, present  and past to him are one thing.   He states that although he can see the future he cannot act to change things, he is but a passenger who's own actions have already been predetermined.

When the US Government passed a bill banning Masked Vigilantism, unlike the other Watchmen, Dr Manhattan did not have to reveal  his identity as the government already knew who he was.  But as far as Dr Manhattan was concerned he was no longer Jon Osterman, that person died in the accident that gave birth to him.

As the years go on he starts to lose touch with his humanity at the cost of distancing  himself with others, especially his long time girl friend and lover The Silk Spectre.
